Swimming with the sea turtles is lovely, but people should be warned never to swim on top of them. The turtles can be frightened and will not come up for air, even to the point of drowning. People should also not be petting the turtles or other wild animals. It makes them less afraid of people who would do them harm. In Hawaii, they say you should stay at least 5 feet away from turtles, and it’s illegal to pet them, as it should be.
Thank you for commenting! In this part of Tenerife the Turtles actually seek out human interaction, many have been rescued and returned to the wild but like to visit the tourists every day. Some swimmers feed them, but you are right holding on to a turtle can be dangerous, however a human swimmer is no match for their speed and agility, if they are unsure about someone they are away.
What time of year are the turtles in alcala? Was there Thursday and no turtles around….
I have seen Turtles here at all times of year. Much depends on the state of the sea…
